KING OF COAL – THE TYCOON GAME
On December 17th 2015 , the Dutch State of Limburg celibrates the 50 Year Anniversary of the announcement of closing the Dutch coalmines on december 17th 1965. To honour the mining industry we came up with a new idea: a coalmine tycoon game based on the 7 Dutch biggest coalmines. It involves historical features of the Dutch mining industries and the way of operating in society.
During the first scetches it became quite clear that a lot of historical research would be needed to give the game the special touch of 50 years back in time. Historians and former coalminers were consulted and a unique team of researchers was formed. Each one contributed something which would make the game better.
A special selection of 50 cards where added containing historicals happening or common day issues from back then during the mining industry. For example: recruiting new coalminers in Southern-Europe or paying a widow 1000 Dutch guildens because her husband died during a mining accident.
A special set of miniatures was also added. Art-director Christian Wauben designed 7 special miniatures which where printed in silver and in gold. Another unique feature was the money. Since it was a tycoon game, we decided to create a Dollar like currency adding the faces of the 7 founding fathers to it. The ‘Mining Bucks’ were designer bij Robert Nijboer.
Last but certainly not least a limited certificate was added to the boardgame. King Alexander & Queen Maxima of The Netherlands received King of Coal No.1 and European Union Vice-President Frans Timmermans got No.2 as a thank you for his commitment towards the celebrations.
